Sandblasting in Architecture: From Surface Prep to Decorative Etching

Sandblasting has two completely different applications, industrial surface preparation and decorative etching for glass, stone and concrete. Understanding both unlocks wider project possibilities.

Sandblasting, more accurately called abrasive blasting, uses compressed air to propel abrasive media at high velocity against a surface. The technique was developed as an industrial process in the late nineteenth century, primarily for cleaning and preparing metal structures. Today, it occupies two entirely distinct roles in construction and design: industrial surface preparation for structural work, and precision decorative etching for architectural glass, stone, concrete and metal features. The same fundamental physics produce very different results depending on abrasive choice, pressure, distance and substrate.

Industrial Sandblasting: Surface Preparation for Structural Steel

In industrial applications, abrasive blasting removes rust, mill scale, old coatings and surface contamination from structural steel, creating the clean anchor profile required for paint, galvanising or other corrosion protection systems to adhere correctly. The level of surface cleanliness is specified to the Sa2 or Sa2.5 standard, which defines the percentage of the surface that must be free of all visible contamination. An inadequately prepared surface under a protective coating will fail; the coating lifts from the contaminated substrate and corrosion progresses rapidly beneath it, often without being visible from the outside until significant structural damage has occurred.

Decorative Sandblasting: Etching Glass, Stone and Concrete

In decorative applications, sandblasting etches precise patterns, text and imagery into materials by selectively abrading the surface. A vinyl resist mask is cut to the design and applied to the surface; the sandblasting removes material in the exposed areas and leaves the masked areas untouched. On glass, the result is a frosted matte finish with photographic-quality detail resolution. On stone and concrete, the result is a recessed relief with depth and texture. On anodised or painted aluminium, the abrasion reveals the bright substrate beneath the surface layer.

Design Preparation for Decorative Etching

Decorative sandblasting artwork must be supplied as a vector file for mask cutting. Minimum feature size, the smallest element that can be reliably masked and blasted, is approximately 3mm for standard production, and 1.5mm for premium small-format work. Very fine lines, small text below 8pt and fine cross-hatching details should be avoided or tested before committing to production. The finished etch depth depends on material hardness and blast duration; glass typically etches to a depth of 0.1-0.5mm, stone to 2-5mm, and concrete to 3-8mm depending on aggregate.
