Computer Numerical Control (CNC) routing is one of the most transformative technologies in modern signage and fabrication. By converting a digital vector file into a precise cutting path, CNC routers can produce shapes, letters, relief panels and architectural details that would have taken a skilled craftsperson hours to produce by hand, in minutes, with sub-millimetre precision, repeatable across any production run. For clients and designers, understanding what CNC routing can and cannot do unlocks a much wider range of creative possibilities.
How CNC Routing Works
A CNC router works from a digital file, typically an SVG, DXF or AI vector file, which is processed by CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software to generate a toolpath. This toolpath tells the machine's spindle, a high-speed rotating cutting tool, exactly where to move, how fast, and how deep to cut. The result is that any shape that can be drawn as a vector can be cut with the same precision. The machine does not tire, does not deviate, and produces the same result on the hundredth piece as on the first.

Design Guidelines for CNC Production
When designing artwork intended for CNC routing, several constraints must be observed. Minimum feature size (the narrowest cut or the smallest internal space between two elements) depends on the material, typically 4mm for PVC, 6mm for aluminium, and 8mm for acrylic. Inside corners cannot be perfectly sharp, as the router bit has a physical radius: a 4mm cutting bit produces a 2mm radius inside corner. Bridges (small connection points between letters) must be included in large, open letterforms to prevent them from falling out during cutting. All artwork must be supplied as closed vector paths, not open curves.
