Safety signage serves a single, critical function: communicating information that keeps people safe, instantly, under any conditions including stress, low light, and language barriers. When it fails to do this, because the design has prioritised aesthetics over legibility, or because custom graphics have replaced internationally standardised symbols, it is not merely a design failure. It is a liability. Understanding how to design and specify effective safety signage is an essential capability for any facility, construction site or manufacturing operation.
International Safety Symbols: Eliminating Language as a Barrier
Internationally recognised safety symbols communicate hazard and safety information without relying on text alone. These symbols are understood across cultures and designed to communicate in under one second. The most effective safety signage systems use standard symbols as the primary communication element, with text as a secondary label rather than the primary message. A workforce that includes multiple languages, common in Ghana's construction and industrial sectors, benefits enormously from symbol-led signage.
The Four Categories of Safety Signs
- Prohibition signs (red circle with diagonal red bar on white background), tell people what they MUST NOT do. Example: No smoking, No unauthorised access
- Mandatory signs (white symbol on blue circle background), tell people what they MUST do. Example: Hard hat required, Safety boots must be worn
- Warning signs (black symbol on yellow triangle background), alert to hazards. Example: Flammable materials, Electrical hazard, Slippery surface
- Safe condition signs (white symbol on green rectangle background), provide information for safe use and emergency guidance. Example: Fire exit, First aid, Emergency eyewash
Common Design Mistakes in Safety Signage
- Too much text, safety signs should carry maximum 5 words; anything more is not read under stress
- Non-standard symbols, custom graphics, however well-designed, do not carry the instant recognition of standard safety symbols
- Insufficient contrast, the colour coding system must not be compromised by overlaid textures, gradients or low-contrast typography
- Wrong mounting height, safety signs should be at eye level (1.6-1.8m) unless they are exit signs, which must be visible above visual obstructions
- Wrong size for viewing distance, use the formula: sign height = viewing distance ÷ 200 as a minimum size guideline
- Inconsistent sign families, mixing different sign styles, shapes and materials within the same facility creates visual confusion and reduces authority
