Most people encounter heat transfer and sublimation printing first as a merchandise technology, branded mugs, T-shirts, lanyards. The commercial applications of the process have expanded far beyond these entry-level uses. Today, heat transfer and dye sublimation are production-grade processes used for architectural interior elements, large-format display, workwear, and premium promotional products that require photographic colour accuracy and material durability.
How Heat Transfer and Dye Sublimation Work
In dye sublimation, a design is first printed onto a special transfer paper using sublimation ink. The paper is then placed in contact with the substrate and subjected to heat (typically 180-200°C) and pressure in a heat press. At this temperature, the sublimation ink converts from solid to gas and penetrates the polymer structure of the substrate, becoming part of the material itself rather than sitting on its surface. The result is a print that cannot be scratched, peeled or washed off, because the dye is bonded at a molecular level with the substrate.

Design Guidance for Sublimation Production
Sublimation printing reproduces colour with exceptional accuracy, but the colour gamut, while wide, is not identical to CMYK or RGB on screen. Designs with very deep blacks may print slightly muted unless a specific K100 black is used in the artwork. Very fine detail below 1mm at output size may not reproduce with full clarity on fabric substrates. Designs must extend to the bleed boundary (minimum 5mm) on all edge-to-edge applications. Artwork should be supplied at 150 DPI at final output size as a minimum for acceptable quality, with 200 DPI recommended for premium applications.
